Introduction

Welcome to the SLICE How To community. This How-To Wiki is a user-written, unofficial user guide and is not affiliated to FiveNinjas or any other developer of software or hardware used in SLICE.

SLICE is 'the user-friendly media player with internal storage and a Raspberry Pi heart.' [3] It is designed and produced by five media and Raspberry Pi experts based in Sheffield, UK. Their company is called FiveNinjas [4], and SLICE was developed out of a successful Kickstarter campaign in the autumn of 2014. The first Slices were made available to early backers in March 2015.

SLICE consists of a Raspberry Pi Compute module [5] installed into a purpose-built motherboard. The technical specs are as follows [6]:

  • BCM2835 SoC (700MHz ARM11 CPU + GPU for media decoding & graphics)
  • 512MB RAM
  • 4GB eMMC Flash (for OpenElec and Kodi)
  • Optional 2.5 inch SATA hard disk for media files - seen as a USB drive
  • Full-size HDMI port with 5.1 audio pass-through
  • 3 USB 2.0 ports
  • 10/100 Ethernet port
  • 3.5mm jack for either stereo analogue (up to 192KHz 24 bit) or optical output for 5.1 surround pass-through
  • Micro USB port for using Slice in disk mode (to load media) or can be used to re-program the Flash (eMMC)
  • IR Sensor
  • Real-time clock with backup battery
  • 25 programmable RGB LEDs
  • Power input jack (barrel type, 5V 3A)

Supported additional hardware

  • 2.5 inch (laptop) SATA hard disk - thickness must be no more than 9.5mm
  • USB keyboard
  • WiFi dongle (supplied)
  • RF remote dongle (supplied)
  • USB external drive - external PSU recommended
  • USB Bluetooth adaptor

Internal software

Slice is fundamentally Linux-based, using OpenElec [[7]] as the base operating system, and Kodi (formerly XBMC) [[8]] as the media centre software.
